Assignment: Create a stylized portrait of a famous individual using a single, appropriate typeface.
Technology: Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop.
Description: The text itself is made up of some of the Justice’s most notable cases, accomplishments, and attributes including the popular “Notorious RBG.” The text was warped and shaded in Photoshop to give the portrait dimension.
Based on a photograph by Sebastian Kim.
Assignment: Create two calendar pages in the style of a famous graphic designer using only text and proximity to create the appearance of a grid.
Technology: Adobe Illustrator, InDesign.
Description: Like the work of Müller-Brockmann, the calendars use the alignment and spacing of typographic elements to create a grid layout without the use of lines. The spacing of elements as well as changes to the font style create relationships between the data in the calendars. The design of the shapes in the calendar pages and their respective color themes were also directly inspired by Müller-Brockmann.
Technology: Adobe Illustrator
Description: Originally concieved as a component of an animated graphic, this image was really born of my own creative experimentation more than anything else. Created entirely in Adobe Illustrator, I used combinations of shapes, values, colors, and textures to create this illustration based on the back of my camera, a Fujifilm XT-5. Many of the buttons and other components required multiple shapes with their own gradients and values to be stacked together to create a three-dimensional appearance. Object shadows and selective highlights also contribute to the impression of depth.
Assignment: Create two composite photographs using, at minimum, two original photographs each.
Technology: Digital Camera, Adobe Photoshop. Lightroom Classic.
Description: In these images, the rubber duck and the camera were photoshopped into their respective scenes. This first required taking photos of each object with lighting that would most closely match the color, intensity, and direction in their respective final scenes. Next, the items were inserted into the background images and adjusted for color, contrast, and other elements to make them feel like a part of the original composition.
Assignment: Create a photo collage representing your hometown and personal style.
Technology: Adobe Photoshop
Description: The collage is an homage to my hometown and contains images of many local landmarks, including the clock tower, bridge, radio flyer slide, to name a few. Additionally, several elements representative of myself were included, such as the calligraphy pen, my cat, dog, and the lilac flowers, which are both the official city flower and my personal favorite.
Assignment: Create a series of staged product photographs using controlled lighting.
Technology: Digital Camera, Lighting Equipment, Adobe Lightroom Classic, Photoshop.
Description: All the images in the set were photographed in a makeshift lightbox that I created out of a cardboard box with various colors of posterboard for backgrounds. The images were lit with a pair of inexpensive clamp lights found at my local hardware store and some color-changing led bulbs. Special attention had to be paid to the direction and intensity of the lighting to minimize the brightness and quantity of reflections on the shiny coffee bag. The steam rising from the cup in both the gray background image and the green hazy image was added in Photoshop. The hazy image with green lighting was an accident but I thought the interaction between the light and vapor was interesting and made for an unusual but fitting take on a product photograph of some Kick Ass coffee.
